Motherhood

Motherhood is the most beautiful, challenging, heart-warming, exhausting and wonderful journey. I wouldn't have thought that I would become a mother of three boys in three years, but here I am! As an occupational therapist specializing in perinatal and postpartum health, I've become passionate about helping new moms define and embrace their own motherhood. In these posts, I share all things mama, baby and kiddo-related!

Halfway Point in Pregnancy, Part III

20 weeks Then, Then and Now We’ve made it to the halfway mark with this pregnancy already! Last time I wrote a blog post comparing 20 week update for my second pregnancy and my first. To keep with tradition and also show how different pregnancies can be, I’ve given some updates about this pregnancy so far. Morning sickness This time I was a lot more affected by symptoms of nausea, lightheadedness etc. than the first two pregnancies. “Morning sickness” is a deceptive term, since you can have these symptoms any time of day. I tended to be more nauseated towards the evening. Luckily, it was never to the point of…

    Gender Reveal for Baby #3

Gender Reveal…   Oh boy x 3…you read this right! So if you calculate it to include the dogs, the ratio of males to females in our household…it will be 6:1. I am the sole carrier of estrogen…still. We are blessed to carry on the male dynasty. I’m officially like that mom from Bridesmaids. Let me be candid for a minute.I was definitely disappointed at first when I found out it was another boy. I was 10 weeks in, got the call while I was at work, and it just caught me so off-guard. Of course I dreamt of cute bows and tutus and a mini-me that I could go…

We Have Something To Tell You…

Yup, here we go again!!!  We wanted to wait until after Carter’s 1st bday last week to announce that Baby #3 is on his/her way in April 2019!! When we broke the news to close friends and family has prompted many questions, and some unsolicited, but well meaning advice. Here are some answers to a few FAQ’s: (BTW my husband edited this post to include his own voice since he said “I made this baby too”…so enjoy reading) “Was this baby planned?” Of course, by a Higher power! In that Calvinist sense, every baby is planned, as is everything else in our lives. As Christians, we believe God has His…

    31st Birthday Lessons

Another year, another list of lessons learned. Turning 30 last year was a huge milestone, but what made it even more significant was becoming a mother of two… a week later. What a difference a year makes!! As I embark on my 31st year of life today (or is it technically my 32nd since I’ve already lived 31 years?), I was reflecting on what I have learned over this past year. Here’s what I came up with: I’m more than just a mother. Motherhood takes up the majority of my everyday life, but it alone does not define me. I’m a wife, a daughter, an OT, a friend, a colleague,…

When Your Toddler Has Vacation Blues

What do you do when your toddler has vacation blues or becomes homesick while on vacation? I didn’t even realize that was a thing…until we traveled with our toddler last week. Well let’s explore what it means and what you can do to help your little one who might be longing for the comforts of home. Last week we took a roadtrip up to New York to stay attend our nephew’s baby dedication, spend some time with my in-laws and then a 5-day vacation in the Hamptons with a few of our friends and their kids.  We’ve traveled with Chase numerous times since he’s been born, including Florida, NY, Philly…

Why I took A Month-long Break from Blogging

Hi guys! I took a break from blogging and I’m here to say I’m sorry, but not sorry. At first it was unintentional, but then I decided to take a deliberate break. Sorry that I didn’t warn you, although I’m sure you didn’t notice I was MIA. So anyway, here’s why I decided to do it. Time – As many of you know, I’m a mom of 2 little ones (2.5 years and 10 months old). I’m also working full-time (for the most part) as an occupational therapist at a hospital. On top of that there are all the regular day-to-day duties of mom-ing, wife-ing and housekeeping that need to…

    Having a Sensory Kid

What is a sensory kid? Have you ever heard the words: Too sticky, too wet, too loud, too bright, too mushy! Not bouncy enough, not tight enough, not soft enough, not crunchy enough! Sound like a child you have or know? Sound like an adult you know? As humans, we all have certain sensory needs or sensitivities. Sensory processing is a way of our brains and body to understand the external stimuli through our five senses: sight, sound, taste, feel and smell. Around the toddler age, a sensory kid starts to develop an awareness for what type of sensations they prefer, tolerate or dislike. For example, they might love being…

    Diversity for Little Readers

For 30+ years, my mother was a reading teacher for elementary school children.  Basically, she’s an expert in knowing what literary content is age appropriate at each reading level. She has always impressed upon my brother and I that books are a gateway to imagination and knowledge.  Her and my dad bought us children’s books about adoption to learn more about where we came from and why we had a different story than other children we knew.  Since my sons are mixed-race, it makes sense that my mom would ensure that her two grandsons received books with multicultural characters.  It is important for young children to not only be able…

    Raised Real- Baby food solutions

I bet I’m not the only mom that struggles to get their kids to eat vegetables.  Yes, my little ones are only 8 months and 2 years, but I was told the earlier you start introducing new and unique foods, the easier it will be to work it into their regular diet. I was a very picky eater as a child, so I hoped that we could start early with our boys to develop a diverse palate. Well, karma is something because I now have a toddler that won’t eat much more than chicken, spaghetti, rice&beans and PBJ. When Chase first started on solids at 4 months old, I was…

Long Hair Don’t Care: Boy Mom’s Perspective

“Oh my god, look at that hair!” “Your son’s hair is beautiful, he could pass as a girl!” “Can I touch his hair?” Yup. These are the main things we hear from strangers when we go out in public. My son’s curly fro is definitely his main feature, and attracts a lot of attention wherever we go. I get a lot of questions and comments about his hair (the good and the bad), so I decided it was a topic worth diving into. I’ve collaborated on this post with another boy mommy blogger friend, Mazel, who also has two boys with unique, long hair. I’m so happy to have her…
